Hey Marseilles - "Heart Beats"

You may know this indie rock band from their feel-good tune, "Rio". But have you heard this guy yet? The 0:44 mark is where you might feel a little something. Oh but wait. That feeling doesn't stop here. Keep watching...

MØ - "Glass"

For those of us that go nuts for the likes of Lana, Banks, Lykke Li, Santigold, and (recently) Lorde, LISTEN UP. It seems that there is a rise in sexy, electronic soul female musicians. Karen Marie Ørsted, or better known by her alias: , has joined this Femme Fatale Indie Pop party. (Fun fact: "MØ" is old Norse for "virgin")  She's been working with No Wav to release her much anticipated four-track debut EP entitled "Bikini Daze", and it is FIRE.  This isn't the first time we've heard of the dame.  She's been dropping singles here and there since the beginning of 2012.  It started with "Maiden" about a year ago.  Then "Pilgrim" hit with a bit more attention.  By the time "Glass" came along, she was a star in the electro-pop underworld.  Since then, she's done work with Diplo (featured on this EP) and about to be drop a track with Avicii.

The Copenhagen native has just the right weird, quirky personality to attract all those "Grimes" fans out there. Case in point: her Facebook about page claims that her "interests" are "you, youth..".  This interview shows just how in-it-to-win-it this Scandinavian pedigree is.  The passion here is heart-warming.

We just missed her U.S. tour (she was at Webster Hall here in NYC on September 24th) but that doesn't mean we can't still ooze over her sultry dance hits.

Back to School Special ft. Clementine and the Galaxy

TurnStyle continues to bring us the best new underground acts for their third show of the Back to School Special series.  The kickoff party was pretty dope.  If you missed it, catch up with my review here.

Friday night (9/20/13) was one of those perfect nights to go out.  You know, absolutely clear, just the right temperature, etc.  It seemed like everyone was totally feeling a break after the long week and the streets of the Lower East Side were packed.  So the crowds didn't surprise me when I walked into Pianos

I made it just in time for the start of Indie electronic duo KNTRLR.  The pair performed an eclectic range of tunes for us. The majority of the tracks held true to their Indie alternative rock, which is always pretty rad to see live, especially with the musical talent of these guys.  However, they added an electronic element to the performance as well.  Mixing beats along with a live band makes things all the more interesting to the ear.  In the background played a sort of promo video that seemed to made especially for this occasion, which was cool.

The headliner for the evening was next: Clementine and the Galaxy.  Another eclectic duo making savory sweet tunes.  This pair's focus is on electro-pop and they sure do it well.  Before even seeing them live, they had me replaying their entire debut EP, "Clementine and the Galaxy" over and over again.

The pair file themselves under what they call "art pop", a genre totally new to me.  Apparently the likes of Kate Bush and Bjork are classified under the same genre (no it's not just the title of Lady Gaga's new album...).  Art Pop is defined as "a genre that blends the melodies of Pop music with unconventional or experimental elements."

Julie Hardy (Clementine) and Mike MacAllister (the Galaxy) are the two masterminds behind this contagious Pop music.  The two met while doing a commercial project in which Hardy was hired to sing and MacAllister was the recording engineer.  These two are the kind of collaboration that take music very seriously.  They both have unique talents to offer in the music world and their endless accomplishments listed in their bio show it.  Impressive as they may be, they are both extremely down to earth, and humble, as can be seen in their TurnStyle interview that was conducted just before the show.

Electro-pop (or Art Pop) can sometimes be a hard genre to pull off live (in my opinion).  When every sound isn't organically created, (i.e. the use of synthesizers, loopers, and samplers) it can be hard to keep the audience focused.  But with compelling dance music and honest talent like Hardy and MacAllister, you've got one hell of an entertaining show.  Clementine dressed the part, in a futuristic get-up and black mask.  They played all the songs on their EP, which was fun to hear live after just hearing the recorded versions.  But the best part was when they broke out some of their new songs.  One of my favorites was "Lazer Gunz"- definitely going to be a winner in my book.  Their energy was so great for the entire show, at one point asking, "Are you guys gonna dance?!" and we certainly did.  How can you not?

So far, TurnStyle's insider genius proves to be accurate.  So stop missing out on all these fabulous up-and-comers in the industry!   The next show in TurnStyle's Back to School Special series is happening THIS Saturday, October 5th at Tammany Hall.  Buy tickets here!  This means there's no excuse to not tweet about the wonderful Miss Melissa Czarnik first.

You know the drill: keep checking back for more concert reviews from the Series and in the mean time, check out my Blog, Twitter and Facebook pages to hear some more cool new music.

TurnStyle's Back To School Special Kick Off Party!

Let’s be real, going back to school after an awesome summer kind of sucks. On the other hand, great new music rules. Last Thursday night(9/5/13) kicked off TurnStyle Music Group’s Back To School Special. The series involves a collection of emerging artists from New York City’s underground music scene.

The Frizzy Blonde was on site to report on the successful series launch.

The night started off with soon-to-be-soul-star, MEKIA. We all watched, wide-eyed, as the multi-talented, four-piece ensemble created an eclectic mix of genres on stage. There’s nothing like being delightfully impressed at a live show. I arrived at the venue not knowing what MEKIA would sound like. Even the band describes itself as an “experience that will always elude description.” And it’s so true. One song had some gospel undertones, one, a bit of country, and another, some tribal drums to really get you baffled. Without any recorded songs yet, tonight was the only time you could experience this “six-layer nacho dip that is piano, violin, drums, bass, guitar, and vocals.” But keep a close eye on these guys. After a quick chat after the show, Mekia herself told me they’ll be solely focusing on recording for the next few months. That means more “nacho dip” for us. HELL YES.

Next up was string composer duo, Charly and Margaux. You might be thinking: what are classical composers doing in a line-up like this and at a venue like DROM? Or at least that’s what I was thinking. Their title sounded more like it belonged in a symphony hall or a ballet. But I was certainly mistaken/delightfully impressed, yet again. For those in the audience who knew nothing about these talented ladies, they were about to experience a real change of perspective. The violinist and violist (respectively) describe themselves as “metro-classical, cinematic chamber rock.” This will either confuse you, or, when you hear them, blow your fucking mind.

The two performed along with three other gifted Berklee College of Music alum: DJ Ginyard (bass), Andy Berman (guitar), and Justin Tyson (percussion). Charly and Margaux are a phenomenon that must be seen live. Their stage presence is remarkable. Everyone could see that the smiles on their faces and the tears in their eyes were absolutely honest. And all because they are just so insanely happy to be doing what they’re doing. The performance itself can only be described in one word: passionate. Check out the picture capturing Charly’s heart-felt expression as she literally feels the sweet melodies.

After some more emotional pieces, they broke into Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”, for which the duo originally composed the string arrangement. They understand that their compositions are defying the status quo, and that their distinct sound may take some time for their audience to truly understand. Charly voices this in an interview back in 2012: “No one knows who we are right now, but we understand that what we want to contribute is going to take a lifetime to get across. We’re starting small and laying huge bricks in our foundation.”

Once the audience recouped from such an intense performance, it was time Frances Rose. Another duo, this time sisters Sarah Frances and Michelle Rose, took to the stage. Both were dressed the part, one in a glitter top and leather shorts, the other in a floral bodysuit and neon cap. They had everyone snapping pictures. They saved the best for last. Their hit electro-pop single, which was included on Kitsuné‘s AMERICA compilation for 2012, “Vampire” was accompanied by a dancer and all three of them broke into a choreographed dance. Being surrounded by music since they were born, these two ladies certainly know how to entertain an audience.

RIP stress, it’s been real. TECLA‘s about to get on stage and we all know what that means. LET GO. Let loose. And let that body move to the groove however it wants to. No one’s watching anyways. From the moment the audience meets her, in her amazing white silk boxing robe, they’re in love. You can catch right on to her quirky, fun personality. Her down-to-earth attitude relaxes the audience and gets everyone moving. How can we not? Her “danceable afro/funk/caribbean/tropical/pop” is insanely addicting. The coolest part? TECLA writes everything herself and it all comes from the heart. She’s inspired by her own life and musical journey. She started as a child pianist, and then soon added singing, rapping, DJing, and producing to the repertoire. After her set, an audience member described her music as “contagious”, and I completely agree. She loosens up her family of fans, new and old, by adding a “you better twerk!” and we eat it right up, busting out into another set of dance moves. After covering Robin S.‘s, “Show Me Love”, she humbly reminds the audience to “say five thank you’s every morning when you wake up.” Hell, a person can’t get more awesome than this.

So there you have it, the first show of TurnStyle Music Group’s Back To School Special. I would say it was a complete success, and I’m positive all of its attendees would agree. Does this sound like a fucking good time to you? Well, it was. So don’t miss the next one! Clementine and the Galaxy play at Pianos on Friday, September 20th. Read up on the event and get tickets here.

Stay tuned for more Back To School Special concert reviews! In the mean time, check out my Blog, Twitter and Facebook pages to hear some more cool new music.

Coasts - "Oceans"

This Bristol five-piece brings us some wonderful tunes perfect for summer.  I am coming a bit late with this one, seeing as it is mid-August and the summer will soon be coming to an end.  But better late than never!  This ensemble of stunning men came together at the university of Bath and began creating some great 'tropical indie', as they call it.  There's immense personality behind these tracks, light-hearted yet insanely powerful at the same time.

Another great song on their Paradise EP is "Wallow".  They've definitely mastered great build up with this one.  Check it out below:

Miriam Bryant - "Finders Keepers"

Looks like Sweden has its own version of Adele.  She's 21, born in England, raised in Sweden, and if I close my eyes during this video, I'd think it was Adele singing.  But it's not.  It's Miriam Bryant.

"Finders Keepers", her debut single, is a solid one, for sure.  It's an anthem about getting over someone, with a ton of personality behind it.  A strong declaration of "you'll never win me over  - I'm on my own side".  It's bound to make anyone feel like they can handle the worst of break-ups.

Check out her SoundCloud for two of her other catchy tracks, "Push Play" and "Raised in Rain".

Smash Mouth - "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby"

What a great classic 90s anthem to go along with the great classic 90s movie, "Can't Hardly Wait".  I SO wish I was part of this music video.

Jungle - "Platoon"

I present to you, my newest discovery: Jungle.  Along with the most adorable music video EVER, featuring the famous B-Girl Terra.

Crystal Fighters - "You & I"

I love the people I meet at bars.  Don't get me wrong-there are a handful of gentlemen that are more of a nuisance than an enjoyment-but most of them are interesting.  For me, I hit the jackpot when I meet someone who shares my love for music.  Or at least has a few bands to introduce me to.  This 'jackpot' of a situation happened about a year ago when a strapping young fellow told me I had to listen to a band called Crystal Fighters.  I was immediately stirred by their one-of-a-kind upbeat version of folk.  However, at this point they only had a six-track debut album to offer called Star of Love. (Check out my favorite below.)  But six tracks just isn't enough.  I needed more.

We've eagerly waited three years for more.  But it was so worth the wait.  Crystal Fighters have finally dropped their sophomore album, Cave Rave (Listen to the full album stream here).  It's just perfect for some summer love, when the sun is shining, everyone's outside, and there's a whole lot of happy going on.

Crystal Fighters are comprised of five East Londoners, originally from the Basque country in Spain.  Their origins strongly influence, but do not control, their every sound.  They take traditional Basque folk and mix it with exciting, fast-paced baselines and catchy vocals, creating a sound so unique, it's guaranteed to captivate.  Musically, they defy pretty much every genre.  People are calling it 'folktronica'.

Cave Rave is a beautiful collection of majestic everything.  It has the power to take you to a far away place.  The band continues to stay close to its roots for this album- always keeping that Spanish flavor that we all love.

It's the soundtrack to living in a fantastical dream.  But only the kind that ends in victory.

Take a break from your real life to get lost in dreams and things that don't exist.  It's a really good time- I promise.

Iggy Azalea - "Bounce"

This song.  HOLY SHIT this song.  It's impossible for me to have a listen and sit still.  Maybe it's just me. Regardless, I had to share it with you.

Iggy Azalea just released the music video for her track "Bounce", which comes off her debut album, The New Cla$$ic.  The Bollywood-themed vid is visually inciting and super cultural, but it's definitely something we've been seeing a lot of.  Ms. Selena is doing the same thing in her sexy new video for "Come & Get It".

Hip-hop goddess and blonde beauty, Amethyst Amelia Kelly, or better known as Iggy Azalea, is anything but 'indie'.  The Australian bombshell has been tearing up the scene since 2007.  And the best part?  She's only 22.  Climbing the success ladder at a rapid pace, Ms. Azalea recently signed on with Island Def Jam, who also reps Kanye and Rihanna.  That should give you a pretty good idea of where she's headed.

She's got a shit load of other videos too.  Check 'em all out HERE.  My favorite one is a take on Toddlers and Tiaras featuring T.I..  One of her first videos for her track off of her first mix tape project, "Pu$$y" is pretty good too.

What made me fall in love with Ms. Azalea in the first place was her insane style.  There's even Tumblr's dedicated to this queen bee.  My personal favorite? Fuckyesiggyazalea.tumblr.com.  Mostly because you can stream The New Cla$$ic for free (as it unfortunately can't be found on Spotify).  For my collection of favorite fashion photos, check out the album on my Facebook page: 'cause she's BOSSY.

The Stepkids - "Legend In My Own Mind"

For more Frizzy-goodness, check out my post below for TurnStyle Music-Group's upcoming show with The Stepkids.  Then come to the show on May 22 to see what all the fuss is about...

May 22nd.  Brooklyn Bowl.  BE THERE.  Because these guys are playing.  And they're not your average band.

This snazzy trio can't be defined by any one genre of music.  They're folk, neo and classic soul and 20th century classical with punk and jazz all rolled into one funky band. And I'm sure you could throw in some other varieties as well.  This is what they pride themselves on.  They prefer not to have a specific, singular sound.  How do The Stepkids define "The Stepkids"? "Psychedelia for the 21st century."

The three dashing members, Jeff Gitelman (guitar), Tim Walsh (drums), and Dan Edinberg (bass and keyboards) have had much experience in the music industry, specifically with R&B and hip hop, before the creation of Stepkids.  They toured with the likes of Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, and Lauryn Hill as a backing group.

Just as they don't have a singular sound, they don't have a singular "lead" singer.  They are constantly emphasizing the importance of each member contributing equally.  They all write the lyrics together and they all sing together, as a whole.

To get the full experience, you really need to see them in person.  Watching this video of their live performance for "Suburban Dream" is getting me stoked for their Brooklyn performance.  They also have a number of hilarious, mind-tripping videos that are worth checking out, but they just don't do the trio justice.  Come see them for yourself.  LIVE. You won't be disappointed.  Plus, one of my all time favorites is opening for them, so get there early!

A$AP Rocky - "Wild For The Night"

A$AP Rocky's newest music video just dropped, and it seems to be right on trend: A high budget video filmed in a developing country.  Though it's nothing new, it's still overwhelmingly entertaining.  Watching these types of music videos makes me feel like I'm watching VICE The Musical.  Am I right?  Watch below and soak up all the culture you can.

Thirty Seconds To Mars - "Up In The Air"

The band that found success after the '90's by mixing post-grunge, screamo, and hard rock is finally back.  And wants everyone to know.  They recently dropped this guy, which is eight and a half minutes long and probably the most intricately planned out music video I've seen to date.  In fact, they're not even calling it a music video.  It's classified as a 'short film,' and rightly so.  It features Damien Hirst, Dita Von Teese, McKayla Maroney and Jordyn Wieber (two U.S. Olympic gymnasts).  Jared Leto, frontman of the band and director of the film, calls it "an epic, bizzarre and hallucinogenic journey through an incredibly surreal landscape."  The amount of money that went behind this?  I couldn't find a number, but it's got to be millions.  Clearly Thirty Seconds To Mars (as well as Virgin Records) want some major recognition for for their new album, Love, Lust, Faith + Dreams, out May 21st.

Coachella 2013

I come bearing apologies for my absence and therefore lack of much needed updates from the realm of new music.  But I'm back! However, my first Coachella experiences have left me nostalgic and dreaming.  In fact, I'm still proudly sporting my general admission wristband.  I don't intend to take it off any time soon either.  The last thing I want to do is bore you with an in-depth review of each band I saw, so I'll keep things short and sweet.

Coachella is also one of those events that's hard to describe to someone.  I tried to prepare myself by reading articles about the festival and looking through all those pictures, but, when it comes down to it, you just have to be there.  My favorite part was being in the middle of everything.  There was never a dull moment.  Ever.  When I was wasn't getting down and dirty at one of the five stages, I was people-watching.  There were so many cool, unique people that came out (there were also uncool, annoying people who just came to party, but that's everywhere).  Check out some really bad photography of everything here.

Here's the top bands I thought were the best live:

  • Robert DeLong
  • Bat for Lashes
  • Alt-J
  • Mona
  • The XX
  • the Postal Service
  • Wild Belle
And the award goes to...
  • Best crowd-dancing experience: Major Lazer
  • Most emotionally-moving performance: Bat for Lashes
  • The biggest disappointment: the Neighbourhood
  • Best stage design: Social Distortion
  • Biggest surprise: Wild Belle
  • Most passionate performance: Robert DeLong
  • Most exciting experience: Fourth row for Phoenix (Thomas Mars crowd-surfed right over me!)
So there you have it.  My short-and-sweet recap of Coachella 2013.  Now back to more music videos!

IO ECHO - "When The Lilies Die"

A definite must see for me on Friday's Coachella lineup is Ioanna Gika and Leopold Ross, who make up the super unique duo, IO ECHO.  These guys are everything 90s grunge-rock mixed with oriental influences.  The addition of Chinese violins and Japanese koto harps to Ross on bass make for an out of mind experience.  How do they describe their music? "Future Space Forest".  I'd have to agree.  There's also something oddly relaxing about it too.

After recently catching the attention of successful musicians like Florence Welch and Hot Chip, they've gotten a lot of publicity.  And then they were hand picked by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails to open for their last show on tour ever.  This is nothing short of impressive considering they've never even released a full length album. Yet.  Keep an eye out for the much anticipated debut on April 2nd.  But, for now, keep yourself busy with the EP -  especially the video for "Outsiders".

Their live performance is known to be as stellar as their tunes.  I love how Gika keeps the far east influences and is always decked out in a beautiful silk kimono for all of her performances.  Check them out at SXSW this year here.  And for my New Yorkers who want their own taste, they play this Friday, March 22nd, at Terminal 5.

Check out a favorite of mine, "When The Lilies Die" below.

The Neighbourhood - "Let It Go"

And so it has been announced: The Frizzy Blonde will be at Coachella 2013.  As a part of my preparation for the first weekend of this epic music festival, I have been keeping myself busy with tons of research on those musicians that I haven't heard of.  Like Skinny Lister, How To Destroy Angels, and Grinderman.  These posts are soon to come, don't you worry.  But for now, I'll be focusing on the musicians I do know.  And that I am out-of-my-mind excited to be seeing in just 30 days. (eek!)

We'll start with these guys: The Neighbourhood.  A band that I intended to write about months ago, but accidentally deleted it.  Oops.  They're a catchy combination of R&B, indie rock, and pop.  I find myself shakin' my shoulders and getting all emotional at the same time. Intense stuff.  The five piece hails from Los Angeles and started in 2011.  This video came out most recently, on their two song EP Thank You,.  However, there are some real gems that I suggest you check out on their first EP, I'm Sorry..., like "Sweater Weather" and "Female Robbery".

Interview: Fulcrum Of The Stars

Because I'm a killer for live music, and probably spend way too much money attending such shows, I decided to start doing interviews with the musicians (most of them friends) and post them on here.  This guy's got a lot of passion for what he does, so I thought I'd share a bit about his band.  Check it out.

Name: Fulcrum Of The Stars

Members:

  • Jeremy Exelbert (vocals and guitar) was born and raised in New York City, and now lives in Harlem.
  • Alex Raderman (Drums) is from Westchester, NY, but has lived in the city for the past 5 years.
  • Madhava (vocals and bass) is originally from Australia, but grew up in Upstate New York, lived in Brooklyn for a few years, and has recently moved Uptown.

FB: When did you first get your start in music?  How did you first get involved in this?

JE: I first started playing music at the age of 10 on Piano- I was pretty good, but it wasn’t the right “sound” for me. At 12, I wanted to play electric guitar, but my mom didn’t let me. Around the age of 14, after quitting Piano, I finally convinced her to get me a guitar, and at 15/16 I started really practicing and taking music seriously.  After High School, I went to Boston University, where I somehow managed to get a degree in Economics without doing much work- reason being, I played music all the time, and got really into songwriting as well.

While in Boston, in addition to playing with a lot of people, jazz bands, rock bands, and one fucking annoying pop singer (who stole my guitar riff and used it for an episode of MTV's Real World), I had a band called James Downtown.  It was with this band that I really started to write my own songs and begin to develop a sound.

After BU, I went to Berklee for a semester to study music seriously.  At this time I was really into Jazz.  I decided I’d rather play professionally than study, so I got a job playing guitar on a cruise ship. I signed a 6 month contract, but 4 months into it, I quit. I was playing top 40’s sets and other people’s songs, which I hated.  After falling in love with this girl who was a guest on one of the cruises, I decided to move back to New York to try to woo her and make it with my original music- the wooing failed.

When I moved back to New York in summer of 2011, I started performing under my own name and recorded an EP that I finished in early 2012.  The EP that was pretty much for the girl I met on the ship- it didn’t do shit. However, almost immediately after finishing the EP that summer, my sound completely changed and I could not longer go by “Jeremy Exelbert.” The project transcended who I was, and each member had to be an integral part, so I formed a new band and named it Fulcrum of The Stars.

The name comes from a line in a poem that my father wrote.  He passed away when I was 9, so it was kind of a tribute to him. The line in the poem means accepting what the universe has laid out for you, and understanding that certain things are out if your control.  I felt like the lyric/band name really fit the music.

After recording a demo in October, I decided the project needed a stronger, more polished voice than mine. Madhava, who was a friend of mine in another band, really wanted to try singing, and now we’re giving it a shot- I really like the way he sounds and how he gets the lyrics and music. We’ll see what happens, but this band has some serious fucking potential. The drummer, Alex Raderman, is a top drummer in the city and plays in another relatively established Indie Band called “Modern Rivals.”

FB: What musicians inspire you?

JE: Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Police, St Vincent, Grouplove, and Barney Kessel (this dude is a fucking genius- and probably the greatest jazz guitarist of all time). I also really dig Delta Spirit, this band is awesome. I have a lot of other influences too, but none of them really affect my songwriting too strongly- not to sound like an arrogant dick, but what I write comes from somewhere else, and at times I don’t even feel like it’s me writing it, but rather, something greater than myself. I’d even go as far as to say that I’m discovering someone else’s songs and trying to write them before I forget how they go, and playing them is my way of sharing those songs that I heard- almost like picking apples and than sharing them with your friends….ya dig?

FB: What are you listening to right now?

JE: I’m listening to life..nah that sounds so lame, haha. I’m really into the new Delta Spirit album right now.  I love their arrangements and songwriting.

FB: What inspires you in writing lyrics?

JE: I always write lyrics after the music. For me, the music always dictates what the content will be. To me, a song exists to explain something that words cannot, so words are just the bullet points, but the music is the real fucking substance. My lyrics can cover anything: love, one night stands (this shit can be love too ya know, haha), lost childhood, depression, I have one about a fictional girl’s contemplative suicide, etc. You get the idea… lyrics are written on a need basis.
FB: Describe your music in 3 words:

JE: “Catchy, uncomfortable truth.”

FB: Anything coming up next besides the album this summer?

JE: Anything coming up besides an album? A lot of new shows, and maybe some band t-shirts. Those are pretty cool and I just got a new logo I like, so we’ll see what happens. Life is pretty unpredictable, one moment you can have a band, the next you can be up to your neck in debt. Let’s hope the band is doing well, haha.

Check these dudes out on Bandcamp, fall in love, then come to their show at Wicked Willy's tomorrow night (2/27) at 7PM! (Also, it's ladies night.............)

Robert DeLong - "Global Concepts"

So it's Saturday evening and I needed a little motivation to get going for the night, seeing as it's cold as hell and raining here in New York.  I'm really not much into this dance-y stuff, but listen to this and you'll see why it got me groovin'.  This video is an epic party of dancing that makes me wish I was actually there.  At least watch until the three minute mark- you'll thank me.

And we'll definitely being seeing more of this guy.  He's been named '2013 Artist To Watch' by MTV, Billboard and others.  Robert Delong wrote, produced, mixed and performed his debut album, Just Movement.  Intense, huh? Well, he isn't just about making people dance, he takes the creation of his lyrics very seriously as well.  We just missed his live performance in NYC, but he'll be playing in Cali on April 14th for all you Coachella lovers out there.

Lord Huron - "Time To Run"

My first experience with Lord Huron was about a year ago when I listened to "The Stranger", one of the four enchanting songs on their first EP, Mighty (2010).  I recently learned of their full length debut album, Lonesome Dreams, that came out this past September and, guilty as charged, have been listening to it on repeat.

Growing up on Lake Huron in Michigan, Benji Schneider started Lord Huron, which has turned into a collaboration of four "best amigos", as he calls them.  Now they are based out of Los Angeles.  Since the release of their debut in 2012, they've been getting quite popular.  They showed up on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in November and have been touring the world, charming the masses with their sounds, ever since.  Their show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on February 23rd is even sold out!  Well, being signed to I Am Sound Records will give you this level of publicity.  After all, the record company signed Florence and the Machine, IO ECHO, and Kate Boy, to name a few.

Satellites - "Railway Line"

Be prepared: this Copenhagen native is about to knock your socks off.  If you don't know already, I am a huge fan of The National and am constantly on the prowl for musicians who can pluck my emotional strings like they do.  Well this one-man-band has answered my prayers.  His name is Johnny Vic and he  puts all these amazing sounds together to create some damn good songs.  Watch him live here.  His deep, soft, booming voice makes it all the more melodramatic.  Some may call it depressing, but I dig it.

The fact that he's not even on Spotify is quite surprising to me and very unfortunate.  However, you can stream his first and only album, Satellites.01, from his SoundCloud page or directly from his creatively designed website: http://www.satellites01.co.uk/.  And I highly suggest you do so.  This is his only music video out, but the rest of the tracks on the album are superb as well.

I also want to point out how rad this video is.  It was directed, shot and finished by Tim Walker of Westbound TV.  The technique he used is phenomenal.

Kasabian - "Fire"

Upon meeting the most adorable Dublin Irishman on Thursday, I was introduced to the electronic rockers Kasabian. After listening to them for the first time, I feel guilty, or embarrassed, for not knowing them before.  They've been around since '97 for God's sake! The English natives from Leicester have produced four pretty badass albums that just seem to get better and better.

We might want to file them under indie rock, right? Wrong.  Lead song-writer for the band, Sergio Pizzorno makes it clear that Kasabian is not indie, "We've never been an indie band, you know, and I sort of fucking hate indie bands, I despise that speed of music." What they really are is "future rock". AllMusic gives a definition that I would say is thoroughly on point for these guys and perhaps the future of rock: "...the band's foundation remained rooted in swaggering, fragmented dance textures and boisterous rock & roll."

I thought this video for "Fire" was pretty sick, but if you want to see what it would be like to rock out to them live, check out their video for "Underdog", their most famous track.  I strongly recommend their most recent two albums, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2007) and Velociraptor! (2011).

Fatboy Slim - "Weapon of Choice"

Also quite amusing is Slim's video for "Weapon of Choice", starring the one and only Christopher Walken shimmying around an L.A. hotel.

Fatboy Slim - "Praise You"

Is everyone aware of how hilariously entertaining Fatboy Slim's music videos are? I definitely wasn't.  I thought I would bring it back old school while we're on the topic of talented deejays.  Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook) was born in the UK and never had much success in playing instruments.  So he got his hands on the turntables and made magic.

The following comment is from a die-hard fan that fits Fatboy's persona to the tee.  It'll hard to meet someone "who's attended a Fatboy gig and not had a laugh, a bit of a dance, acted a bit silly and had a damn good time- which, at the end of the day, is what this dance malarky is all about, isn't it?"

All his videos are pretty comical, but "Praise You" is by far the best.  It hardly cost anything either.  It's really just a recording of a prank pulled at a California movie theater so it took less than $1,000 to make. But it was dubbed "Best Breakthrough Video and Direction" at the MTV Video Music Awards, showing that money isn't everything.

C2C - "Happy" Ft. D.Martin

I haven't been this excited about a post in a while.  So forgive me if freak out a little.  I present to you a quintet of insane deejays.  Maybe these guys are old news to some of you.  But I am a newly christened C2C fan and super excited about it.  DJ Greem, MC 20Syl, DJ Atom, and DJ Pfel make up this crew of turntable genius'.  They're from Nantes, France.  And they "blend analogue and digital like melted musical butter".

I am certainly not opposed to any of the tracks on C2C's freshly debuted EP, Down The Road.  All five songs are so completely different, yet all still hold the same electro-funkiness.  I would definitely check out "The Beat" for a good party groove.  However, I chose to feature my favorite of the C2C videos, which isn't on the EP. Why?  Because director Wendy Morgan has created such a carefree, good-spirited image for us, I literally caught myself smiling as the video played.  I hope it will do the same for you.  Call me crazy, but music makes me move, and moving makes me happy.

White Rabbits - "Percussion Gun"

If you haven't noticed already, I'm a huge fan of tracks dominated by drumming. And this is just that kind of song.  My favorite part of the whole performance is watching Matthew Clark and Jamie Levinson go absolutely nuts on drums. They put their whole being into it. It's so great.

Not much of a "new" band, they released their first album in 2007, and have produced two more after that. This Missouri six-piece has had their songs featured on the Friday Night Lights season 4 soundtrack as well as season 3 of Gossip Girl.
